Australian Truffle Traders in Manjimup, nestled in Western Australia’s south west, is now unearthing first-class quality truffles daily, signifying that the start of truffle season.
Gavin Booth, owner of the family business Australian Truffle Traders, says this year is set to be a bumper.
“We had ample rain at the right time of the year and it’s looking like it’s going to be a good season, the best in about three or four years,” Booth says.
“With no Truffle Kerfuffle happening this year, truffle lovers can still get their fix by ordering a truffle direct from us or visiting us in Manjimup and booking a truffle hunt and lunch at our sister business, Hound and Hunter.”
Hound and Hunter in Manjimup is a café and test kitchen, making truffle products such as truffle pate, truffle terrine, truffle butter and more.
“The truffle cheese toastie has somewhat of a cult following, it’s rich, decadent and delicious, and it’s served with a small truffle and truffle slicer so you can top your own.”
Work up an appetite and see truffles at the source, in the orchard during a truffle hunt. Walk between the oak and hazelnut trees, following the trained dogs Gidgee, Max, Gunnah, Ruby and Malu.
Truffle hunters have a chance to carefully dig up a fresh nugget of black gold.
“People get blown away when they can smell the truffle through the soil and carefully brush away the dirt to reveal a perfect truffle,” he says.
“There’s nothing quite like breathing in the distinctive truffle aroma as a perfectly formed, ripe truffle is harvested.”
Truffle hunters then enjoy sampling delicious truffle products made from scratch using real truffle at café Hound & Hunter where they can also enjoy a truffle laden lunch.
“Last year, we introduced truffle tastings at Hound & Hunter which really adds to the truffle hunt experience and everyone loved it, of course, tastings of freshly baked focaccia with lashings of truffle butter, truffle pate, truffle cheese and more,” says Booth.
Manjimup black truffles are accessible to everyone via Australian Truffle Traders www.australiantruffletraders.com/shop and www.houndandhunter.com.
Direct from Manjimup, freshly unearthed truffles are carefully cleaned, graded, sealed, cold-packed and shipped across Australia via express post with delivery in 48 hours (in most cases).
Deliveries outside of WA are sent on Mondays or Tuesdays by Express Post to avoid the risk of truffles sitting in an AusPost warehouse over a weekend.
Booth says that there’s huge demand for his high-quality truffles in Australia and overseas.
“We ship fresh black truffles all over the world, from Copenhagen to California,” Gavin says.
“Truffles may ooze decadence, but they aren’t just for fancy restaurants, they can be enjoyed at home – freshly grated truffle over creamy scrambled eggs, there’s nothing better.”
The short truffle season typically ends late August or early September.
