Winner of best community event in Australia at the 2021 Australian Event Symposium, Coogee Live is confirmed for 11 and 12 March 2023 and will be held along Coogee Beach in the City of Cockburn.

Anticipation is high after a long wait for Coogee Live to return after the 2022 event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

A program centred around community with the primal theme ‘radiate’ interwoven throughout, the free weekend festival is jam-packed and family-friendly with activities stretching along the coast from North Coogee to Coogee Beach Reserve.

Creation, connection, culture and community is at the core of Coogee Live and this year it’ll be celebrated in a symbolic Lantern Parade on Saturday, 11 March.

The Lantern Parade, a collaboration between LightnUp Inc and Hub 6163, will begin at 6.50pm at Omeo Park.

It will be led by fire provocateurs Dangerous Delights, with Taiko On drummers, Japanese flute and didgeridoo, arriving at 7.30pm at Coogee Beach Reserve.

Starting with a magical stage show, the union of fire and drums will lead the parade of lanterns, snaking its way along Coogee Beach with the light and driving beat beckoning the crowd to follow.

Lanterns handmade by local schools and community members, are a symbol of resilience, strength, and belief in the community. They will be carried in an enchanting procession aimed to inspire belief in ourselves, each other, and the wider community. Strap in for a night of side-spliting laughter at Comedy in the Park on Wednesday 24th May at the Festival Hub, part of the nine-day Boab Metals Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra, Western Australia.

The brilliantly funny Steph Tisdell is joined by hilarious comedians Chris Franklin, Bev Killick and Fabian Woods for one night only set to be a show of hilarity.

Steph Tisdell is a proud Ydinji woman and one of the funniest Aboriginal comedians to explode on the Australian comedy scene. Her mission: to empower those around her using comedy as a way to observe the world and finding the funny in heartbreak. After all, comedy is just tragedy plus time.

With a magnetic personality and quirky stage presence that skips between gleefully playful to biting political satire, Steph’s comedy is vulnerable, real and insightful. Before discovering her gift for comedy, was enrolled to study law and this formidable intelligence and sense of social justice now permeates her material. Her witty observations challenge stereotypes in non-offensive and hilarious ways.

Steph has a remarkable similarity to an Australian Idol winner opened her interview on The Project (Ten) with, “In case you were wondering, I’m not Casey Donovan.” She won the Deadly Funny National Grand Final in 2014 and been collecting awards and accolades ever since.

“Look, COVID really gave us a hard time to get this show happening but it’s all finally happening and I am so excited!” exuded Tisdell.

“I’m issuing you a threat – you will laugh and you will have a good time. I’m going to make sure of it because I’m just so over the moon to be a part of the Ord Valley Muster! So get your face exercises happening because otherwise you’ll struggle after laughing so much!

“I haven’t been on Miriwoong Country before and I’m hoping this will be the first of many visits,” Tisdell remarked.

One of Australia’s premier comedy stars Chris Franklin is an Aussie bloke, a yobbo and a bogan, from his flannelette shirt to his double plugger thongs. His "Hoganesque" style of comedy appeals to every average Australian and touches on the delicate issues of beer, sport and relationships.

His first single ‘Bloke’ went double platinum, he’s had three Aria Nominations, and hes’s worked with comedy legends Jimeoin, Anh Do, and Dave Hughes, rock bands including The Angels, Rose Tattoo, and The Screaming Jets and international music stars including Santana, Chris Isaac and Status Quo.

As if that’s not enough, Chris Franklin has also done five ‘Tours of Duty’, travelling to The Solomon Island, East Timor, Iraq and twice to Afghanistan, to entertain the Aussie troops to help keep their spirits high.

From the bold and brassy school of stand up, Bev Killick delivers a non-stop energetic set that starts when she blasts her way on stage.

Likeable, bawdy and real, Bev Killick knows how to get a crowd laughing, a trait that had her chosen as the opening act for Puppetry of the Penis that toured nationally performing to more than 250,000 people. She’s a comic and actress who has had a guest cameo on Kath and Kim, been a panel member on Beauty and the Beast, was featured on Stand Up Australia, a special guest on the hit show Pizza, and has performed three solo shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

The Herald Sun said, “Bev Killick was a particular standout. The singing, rapping, rough-talking soul mama had every girl in the room shedding tears of laughter with her irreverent ranting and granny undie flashing.”

A proud Noongar Yamatji man, Fabian Woods won the 2019 Deadly Funny National Awards for his tales of life, family and work and has performed sell out shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Fringe World Festival Perth.

Ord Valley Events chair Sophie Cooke said that it’s been a few years in the making to get these hand-picked comedians to the Muster.

“We’re thrilled to have Steph Tisdell headline Comedy in the Park – we had her booked to come to Kununurra in 2020 – and we all know what happened that year,” said Cooke.

“Comedy in the Park is popular every year and with the stellar line up of these talented and hilarious humans, we expect it to once again be a sell out show.”

Comedy in the Park is part of the Kimberley’s Ultimate Festival, the Boab Metals Ord Valley Muster held 19 - 27 May 2023 in Kununurra, Miriwoong and Gajirrabeng country.

Shelter Brewing Co has released its first alcohol-free beer, the easy drinking Big Splash Pale that will be added to the Busselton brewery’s core range.

“Zero-alcohol beer isn’t so much a trend, it’s here to stay – there are more health-conscious drinkers looking for options, so we’ve jumped in with one of our own,” said Jason Credaro, head brewer at Shelter Brewing Co.

Credaro said that the Big Splash Pale was brewed with carefree summer days in mind.

“The flavour profile has tropical notes and citrus characteristics, with light malt and a satisfying, very moreish bitter finish - it’s fresh, zesty, crisp and clean – exactly want you want on hot days,” Credaro said.

“The Big Splash Pale is refreshing and freeing – the same feeling you get when you jump off the jetty in Busso and plunge into the cool ocean metres below.

“And just like jumping off the jetty, you might be apprehensive the first time trying a non-alc beer, but I think once you do, you’ll want to jump again and again - and being non-alc, you can freely drink more.”

The Big Splash Pale is available in 375ml cans, four-packs, cubes and available from Shelter now and in select bars and bottle shops from 28 November.

PowerPlay Bibra Lake Opens

PowerPlay’s second two-level indoor karting entertainment complex opens in Bibra Lake on 22 November 2022.

The first PowerPlay opened in Joondalup two years ago with state-of-the-art super-fast electric karts and it proved to be an instant hit with young and old with over 150,000 racers clocking up over 1.5 million laps.

Now speed-demons and thrill seekers can get their fix in the southern suburbs with the Bibra Lake track open seven days per week from 10am to 9pm.

CEO Glenn Macneall, a three-time Asia Pacific Rally Champion, said that PowerPlay’s model of competitive fun and pure entertainment takes the thrill of racing and makes it accessible to everyone.

“All you need are closed shoes, a $4 balaclava that you buy and keep, and a healthy dose of competition.

“There’s no fumes, no dust, no fighting the weather or the elements – PowerPlay is completely indoors, air-conditioned, clean, quiet and a whole lot of fun,” said Macneall.

“PowerPlay has been popular for work functions, birthday celebrations, and groups of friends – it’s for anyone who likes an adrenalin rush.

“We knew PowerPlay would be a hit in Perth – there’s nothing like it anywhere else in Australia, and we are beyond excited to open our second centre in Bibra Lake.”

PowerPlay karts are instantly responsive with six kilowatts of power capable of a maximum speed of 70 kilometres per hour – there’s no lag and no fumes.

The Bibra Lake two-level track is a little wider than the one in Joondalup, great for fast cornering and ‘power slides’ and has a similar layout featuring hairpin bends, sweeping corners, a bridge and a tunnel. It also has a larger arcade games area.

Events that spur on healthy competition are planned for Bibra Lake including the popular “Lights Out”, after dark racing just using track lights and the kart’s headlights, and with the music up loud, it adds another dimension to racing the clock.

PowerPlay electric Sodi karts are imported from France, the track is imported from Italy, the Electronic Safety System is imported from The Netherlands and the electric timing system instantly displays who’s fastest on the big screen.

“The world-class safety system at PowerPlay can slow karts, set maximum speeds, which is great for young racers, and we can instantly shut off one or all karts at once, if required.”

PowerPlay karts have adjustable seats and pedals, F1-styled steering wheel, working headlights for the tunnel, brake lights, a roll bar and four-point safety harness.

The PowerPlay track design and cutting-edge electric kart technology create a powerful, reliable, ergonomic and fun electric karting experience.

A 1982 cherry-coloured hatchback wins GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint

In a competitive field of rally cars, a 1982 Toyota Starlet driven by Matt Cherry and co-driver Cade Bell has won the GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint yesterday (13th November).

A pleasant 22 degrees, the perfect rallying weather, drew thousands of spectators who lined the Bunbury street circuit.

There were 110 competitors at the start who raced the clock in the Halifax Light Industrial Area along the 4-kilometre course, four times clockwise and four times anticlockwise, and 20 competitors retired, unable to complete all eight runs.

The fastest was Cherry’s red 1982 Toyota Starlet built by Racing Dynamics, more like a rocket than a regular hatchback and highly modified for tarmac rallying.

The 1.8-litre turbo two-wheel-drive Toyota Starlet has 420 rear-wheel horsepower and was faster than four-wheel-drive rally cars with bigger engines and more horsepower.

“We are all pretty amazed we managed to win such a great event - I’ve watched a lot of these good drivers for years, so to be the outright winner is something to be proud of,” says Cherry of Carine.

“My strategy was to keep it clean and have a heap of fun which is easy to do when you’re flying around the streets in the Starlet, it’s a hand full.

“We had a few issues arise in the afternoon including a leaking oil line and I had a little spin on the second last run, but we managed to make it back up in the last run - thanks once again to Racing Dynamics for the super quick fix - it made it a little more exciting.

“The crowd was great and a lot of people came to have a chat about the car and the first thing they ask is ‘what’s is this thing?’ which is quite funny but they all loved the little rocket and we hope they enjoyed watching it as much as I did driving it. It makes me smile.”

Cherry adds that he’d like to thank to all officials and organisers on a well-run rally.

In second place outright, just four seconds off the pace was Cody Harris and co-driver Morgan Ward in their 2004 Mitsubishi Evo 8 MR. The duo took the class win for the Open Rallysprint: 4WD.

Harris, who was leading up until half-way, says it was an overall good day despite some challenges.

“We were struggling with heat in our brakes, and struggling with oil pressure all day,” says Harris of Osborne Park.

“A class win is great, you could say it was redemption for last year where we were second and I had a fuel pump failure at the end of the day, so it’s nice to be able to finish this year with great result,” says Harris.

Rounding out the top three was Matt James-Wallace and co-driver Ben Tuck in a 1993 Nissan GTR R32.

There are eleven classes in the GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint determined by engine size, 2WD or 4WD and decade of manufacture.

Winner of the ‘Targa Cup: 4WD 3500cc and over’ class and fifth outright was Dardanup’s Will White with co-driver Matt Thompson in his 2018 Nissan GTR Nismo.

White, who bought the Nissan GRT some 18 month ago, says he’s starting to get a handle on the car.

“There’s a lot of weight in this car compared to my previous Mitsubishi Evo, so I’m learning how to handle that weight, and doing the sprints helps learn about car control,” says White.

“We had one run that was a bit slow and it cost us third outright when the car went into limp mode – a protection mode within in the car - and we had to stop the engine and restart it, and lost about 15 seconds on the fifth run.

“It was good fun event, hats off to all the organisers, Ross and the team, it’s fantastic they came out and help run a great event,” says White.

Clerk of Course Ross Tapper says that he’s happy that the GT Fabrication Targa Bunbury Sprint ran smoothly and was incident-free event.

“Besides having to clean up some oil on the course which delayed the rally for about 45 minutes, it all went well and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from competitors, they seem to love the short, sharp rallysprint format,” says Tapper.

Last year’s winner Troy Wilson had to retire his 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X after the first run.

The ex-AFL West Coast Eagle explains that a dump pipe broke off the turbo in the first five meters on his first run, and while trying to get through to the finish to do repairs, it melted the brake fluid plastic bottle and some wires.
