Coogee more alive and connected than ever

Creativity, connection, culture, cooking and kids activities will feature in the bigger and better Coogee Live, confirmed for March 7th and 8th along Coogee Beach.

With an event footprint close to 1.5 kilometres, Coogee Live will be divided into ‘worlds’, each with its own theme and activities.

City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said that Coogee Live is about bringing the local community together as well as attracting visitors.

“Coogee Live is designed to showcase the local area as well as its local artists and artisans, creating a free family-friendly festival for the community,” the Mayor said.

“It’s inclusive with something for everyone, be it a hands-on cooking class to a DIY demonstration, dance lessons, art appreciation, composting and gardening, silent cinema, live music on the jetty, pop up restaurants and so much more.

“There are over 80 activations along the beach from North Coogee to Coogee Beach Reserve. Coogee Live will really bring the area to life.”

At the northern end of Coogee Beach at Omeo Park is the LiveLighter Omeo Hub, inspired by the area’s nautical history where winding pathways lead to little fairy nooks and to boisterous pirates recounting maritime stories and teaching youngsters how to make treasure maps. The sprawling adventures zone is a place where parents can relax as kids are entertained with games, activities, circus workshops, music and more. There’ll be beachside yoga and a chance to learn about the park’s namesake, the Omeo Shipwreck, during historic walking tours. On stage, kick back and listen to tunes played by Joan and the Giants.

Adjacent is the Ocean Kitchen Garden, which is all about food and sustainability. Themed to fit with a healthy beachside lifestyle, local produce and producers will star alongside artisan fare, pop up style restaurants, workshops, hands-on cooking classes with Jordan and Anna Bruno, Q & A sessions with some of Western Australia’s top chefs including Scott Brannigan of Coogee Common and Gord Kahle from Cook & Mason who’ll be demonstrating how to cook over coal. Feed your inner greenie with a herb garden creation and learn the art of compositing from gardening gurus.

Further along towards the Coogee Jetty, LiveLighter Community Hub embraces creativity and is the ideal place to come together, learn and laugh. Learn the art of origami and contribute to the flock at the ‘Coogee Takes Flight’ installation and have a go at making your own Brolga puppet with the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and witness the large scale Brolga puppets migrate through the hubs in a moving performance. They’ll also be performances of Yirra Yaakin's acclaimed Djinda Kaatijin, an open air silent cinema, Coogee Community Showcase featuring dance and cultural performance from local artists and the handcrafted Makers Markets.

The Nova Jetty Sessions beach fun party central celebrating the best of Coogee’s iconic beach lifestyle - sun, sand and surf. Presented by our good friends and sponsor NOVA, the Jetty Sessions Hub features live music by the soul funk queen Grace Barbé. At sunset the Fliptease Terrabats light up as they move in mythical giant orbs. Help paint the Big Splash ‘Blank Canvas’ Dolphins with artist Kevin Bynder in conjunction with Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation, join in sand castle competitions, visit the magical Mermaid Cove, shake it off in barefoot dance classes and take advantage of the calm Coogee Bay with SUP and dive lessons.

Expect big belly laughs at the renewed Comedy in the Park held over two nights of hilarity on May 19 and 20 during the ten-day Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster in Kununurra, Western Australia.

Ord Valley Events chairman Beau Robinson said that this year’s comedy has been curated to bring quality comedians and guaranteed laughs to the Muster.

“We’ve hand-picked these comedians to entertain the crowds at the 20th Anniversary of the Ord Valley Muster, and it’ll be held in the new Festival Hub venue at Celebrity Tree Park, walking distance to town,” Beau said.

Comedy in the Park will feature brilliantly funny comics Ivan Aristeguieta, Steph Tisdell and Kevin Kropinyeri, hosted by the master of putting humour into tragic situations, Harley Breen.

Harley hosted Ten’s show Taboo that recently scored a Logie nomination for Most Outstanding Factual or Documentary Program. He appears regularly on TV shows including Hughesy, We Have A Problem (Ten), The Project (Ten), Best Bits (Seven), It's A Date (ABC) and Celebrity Family Feud (Ten).

Consistently unpredictable, Harley projects the immediately recognisable and relatable image of the unpretentious Aussie male. Harley doesn't just use his instant likeability as a platform to deliver solid, topical material, he also gets beneath the nature of things to create a true bond with all his audience and deliver an experience that will be talked about long after the gig is over.

Venezuelan sensation and Australia’s funniest permanent resident Ivan Aristeguieta returns to Muster after a hilarious performance in 2016.

“For us comedians, a gig outdoors is a threat because it usually doesn’t work, but the organisers of the Muster did a wonderful job. It was amazing that on both nights all comedians connected with the 500-strong audience. Everyone was laughing, the weather was perfect, under the stars, it was really magical,” Ivan said.

Ivan is Australia's favourite Venezuelan comedian and relishes the chance to perform in his second language, English. From his own ABC sitcom, Lost in Pronunciation, to his debut live stand up TV special, Chorizo Sizzle, Ivan exploded on to the scene with his brilliant observations on Aussie culture and food, taking him around the country, headlining theatres and selling out festivals.

Ivan has gathered a mass of fans for his trademark cheerful and naive rejoicing in the troubles and joys of a land that is girt by tomato sauce…and the unmissable Saturday Bunnings sausage sizzle.

Steph Tisdell is a proud Indigenous woman and is making a fast rise as one of Australia’s funniest Aboriginal comedians with a mission to empower those around her, using comedy as a way to observe the world, finding the funny in heartbreak. After all, comedy is just tragedy plus time.

With a magnetic personality and quirky stage presence that skips between gleefully playful to biting political satire, Steph’s comedy is vulnerable, real and insightful. Her witty observations challenge stereotypes in non- offensive and hilarious ways.

Steph has a remarkable similarity to an Australian Idol winner opened her interview on The Project (Ten) with, “In case you were wondering, I’m not Casey Donovan.” She won the Deadly Funny National Grand Final in 2014 and been collecting awards and accolades ever since.

Another Deadly Awards comedian is Kevin Kropinyera, a one-man whirlwind and one of Australia’s most established and popular Aboriginal comedians with a long list of Australian TV credits.

Just one week to go until Australia’s most prestigious Stand Up Paddle (SUP) race and one of the word’s fastest downwinder, the Stand Up Surf Shop King of the Cut which gets underway on Saturday 30th November 2019.

The eighth edition of the Stand Up Surf Shop King of the Cut is a favourite with SUP racers thanks to the near-perfect consistent conditions in Mandurah, about an hour south of Perth.

SUPWA King of the Cut Race Director Steve Malcolm said that the wind, known as the “Fremantle Doctor”, is what makes this event so fast.

“The Freo Doctor is the famed, powerful and consistent West Coast sea breeze which creates uninterrupted runners and pushes competitors along like an endless conveyor belt,” Malcolm said.

This year the 12 kilometre race from part of the main event, starting from Dawesville Cut and finishing at Doddies Beach, Mandurah. The 24-kilometre race starts from Dawesville Cut and finishes at the Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club.

Malcolm said that the Stand Up Surf Shop King of The Cut continues to promote new developments in the sport.

“Last year we introduced foiling SUPs and this year there’s another new division with the inclusion of wing foils as a demonstration class.”

There are also categories for outrigger canoes and prone paddleboards.

All competitors will be tracked live via Track Me Live app that allows supporters to see the race progress in real time.

The Stand Up Surf Shop has attracted some of the world’s best with competitors from Japan, Singapore, New Caledonia, Switzerland, Ireland, New Zealand, Greece, Sweden and across Australia and offers equal prize money to males and females.

Besides Western Australian entrants competing for state representation, all competitors are also vying for title honours - the King or Queen of The Cut, which is awarded to the first SUP paddler across the line, regardless of board class or age.

The best spectator points are at the start line along the groin at Dawesville Cut at 1pm, at Doddies Beach for the finish of the King of The Cut 12 at approximately 2.15pm and on the beach in front of the Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club for the finish of the King of The Cut 24 at approximately 3pm.

The Aviair HeliSpirit Kimberley Moon Experience on Saturday 16 May will again be the highlight of the 10-day Argyle Diamonds Ord Valley Muster held in Kununurra, Western Australia, from 15 to 24 May 2020.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2020, some of Australia’s most talented artists have performed in the nation’s most remote party and this year is no different.

Headlining this year is one of Australia’s most successful female artists, Jessica Mauboy, who has performed for Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres and US president Barak Obama.

Mauboy is an Indigenous singer-songwriter who first shot to fame in 2006 as runner up on Australian Idol. In the 14 years since, Mauboy has cemented her place as Australia’s darling and one of our best performers, scooping a multitude of ARIA awards, hit singles and Platinum selling albums as well as awards as an actress. She made history as the first non-European solo artist to represent Australia at EuroVision in 2018. Mauboy’s recent album, HILDA debuted at Number 1 on the ARIA charts and is her most personal album to date.

Mauboy, who performed at the Kimberley Moon Experience in 2006, said that she’s excited to be sharing the stage with Jon Stevens and Busby Marou.

“The Moon was my first big gig after Australian Idol and it holds a very special place in my heart. I remember the fantastic crowds and the stunning country. I can’t wait to go back and play some new and old music at the 20th anniversary concert,” Mauboy said.

Joining Mauboy is one of the most recognisable rock musicians to emerge from Australia in recent memory, former Noiseworks and INXS lead singer Jon Stevens.

With his mojo fully intact, Stevens stands virtually alone in the music scene, with a raw vocal power that won him attention first as a teenager and now as a veteran singer and songwriter. He has never stopped working and time has toughened his delivery while tapping into his emotional wellsprings more than ever before.

Stevens has pedigree with accolades that include a record-smashing debut as a 16-year-old with two consecutive number one singles in New Zealand, huge hits in Australia as lead singer of Noiseworks, worldwide acclaim at centre stage with INXS, an iTunes featured release with his last band, The Dead Daisies, and he wrote and produced its debut single, Lock and Loaded that features the legendary Slash on guitar.

Stevens is a renowned live performer known for bringing true passion and presence to his fans.

Along with Stevens and Mauboy, ‘the Moon’ line-up includes the award-winning duo Busby Marou who have supported some huge international artists including Elton John, Michael Buble and Dolly Parton and played at mega festivals including South by South West and Canadian Music Week. They sell out shows everywhere from Surry Hills to Cairns and have an incredibly loyal and diverse following.

Tom Busby’s playful onstage presence combined with Jeremy Marou’s freakish instrumental ability has cemented their reputation as one of Australia’s most loved live bands in recent times. They have released four albums, earned a string of APRA, ARIA and Deadly awards and created a completely unique vibe based on Tom’s everyman’s approach to storytelling interspersed with Jeremy’s guitar virtuosity.

The music by Busby Marou emanates overwhelming feelings of joy. Tom Busby said he is looking forward to performing in Kununurra.

Supporting Stevens, Mauboy and Busby Marou is up and coming indigenous singer-songwriter Emily Wurramara.

Wurramara was nominated for a 2018 ARIA for Best Blues and Roots Album and is a three-time Queensland Music Award winner. Originally from Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory and now Brisbane based, loved hearing her uncles sing as she grew up, but also realised that women from her community rarely sang in public. Her mission is to inspire and empower members of her community, especially young Indigenous women, to find their voice, and sings original music both in English and Anindilyakwa.

Alongside the Aviair HeliSpirit Kimberley Moon Experience is the glamorous black-tie Kimberley Fine Diamonds Dinner which includes champagne, canapes, multi-course dining under the big Kimberley starry sky and exclusive dance floor to party the night away.

New: Shaw and Partners WA Race Week world’s biggest cash prize for paddle racing

Ocean Paddler has upped the ante with a new initiative, the Shaw and Partners WA Race Week, a series of five ocean paddle races surrounding the iconic Doctor surf ski race to create the world’s richest prize purse with $100,000 up for grabs.

The pinnacle event, the Shaw and Partners Doctor is a 27-kilometre paddle race from Rottnest Island to Sorrento Beach and will be held on Saturday 23rd November. It’s expected to attract 450 competitors, most of whom will compete on surf skis but there are categories for Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP), outrigger canoes and prone paddleboards.

Race Director and owner of Ocean Paddler Dean Gardiner said that since The Doctor’s inception in 2002, there has never been a bigger field or such a big prize pool.

“We’ve made it really attractive for competitors to travel to Perth to compete by clustering five events in the space of a week and increasing the prize pool made possible thanks to the support of Shaw and Partners,” Gardiner said.

“We believe it’ll be the biggest open water surf ski race in the world by competitor numbers.

“We have athletes registered from South Africa, America, England, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Portugal as well as hundreds from interstate.

“It’s well known that Perth affords prime conditions for paddling and especially downwind racing thanks to the wind, the ‘Fremantle Doctor’, which the main race is named after,” said Gardiner, himself a nine-time paddle world champion.

Shaw and Partners WA Race Week starts on Saturday 16th November with the Fenn West Coast Downwind followed by the Ben Hewitt Sunset Surf Ski Series Race 1 on 19th November and Race 2 on 21st November, the new Shaw and Partners Dash for Cash on 22nd November with a $15,000 prize, before the Shaw and Partners Doctor that has a $50,000 prize purse. There is an additional $35,000 in bonus cash and prizes for points scored across all five events.

Financial Services firm Shaw and Partners chief executive officer Earl Evans said that sponsoring WA Race Week is a fulfilling way to support a community and a sport he loves.

“I’ve been paddling for four years and I love the connection with the water, the healthy lifestyle that paddling offers but more importantly, the people involved in this sport are fantastic,” Evans said.
