Morries is changing tack

Morries is changing tack. Owned by the Margaret River Hospitality Group (MRHG) that also owns and operates the White Elephant Beach Café and The Common, the focus of Morries will be on lunch, dinner and late night drinks during the week as well as boozy breakfasts on the weekend.

From Tuesday 29 September 2015, Morries will be open from 12pm until late Monday to Friday, and 8.30am until late Saturday and Sunday.

MRHG Managing Director Anthony Janssen said that Morries weekend morning liquor licence means bloody marys for breakfast was now possible.

“The Morries menu will still feature fantastic tapas throughout the day, with a main menu for lunch and dinner seven days a week,” Mr Janssen said.

“Our Executive Chef Tony Howell is leading the Morries team in the kitchen, and they are loving it – learning new techniques that make each dish an absolute pleasure to eat.

“Morries will have the same cool casual vibe, fantastic cocktails by our award-winning barman Billy Phillips, beer, wine and great food.

“Tony and Billy are working together to match food with cocktails – watch this space for more.”

Mr Janssen said that MRHG has recently built a new enclosed area at sister venue, the White Elephant Beach Café.

“The While Elephant Beach Café overlooks Gnarabup Bay, and does a sensational breakfast with the same great coffee as Morries, and now, it’s open all year around, seven days a week from 7.30am.”

Racing towards Christmas

For the first time, Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo will bring the Red Bull Racing RB7 2011 world-championship winning car to Perth to race three times on the customised Tarmac track.

Event Manager Greg McNeil said the race is on to secure the best seats in the house.

“We’ve had a lot of interest in the VIP Suites and VIP Marquee already – many companies are booking their own suites and tables for their end of year celebrations,” Mr McNeil said.

Joining Ricciardo will be V8 Supercar drivers Will and Alex Davison, MotoGP rider Jack Miller, Formula 1 royalty Alan Jones, Australian Superbike Champion Wayne Maxwell, motorsport commentator and television presenter Greg Rust and V8 pit lane reporter, Perth’s own Riana Crehan.

“We’re building a twin track with jumps on The Dirt circuit – it’ll be a bit like the good old days of Rally Australia’s Super Special Stage – we’ll be making an announcement regarding the rally line up in the next few weeks,” Mr McNeil said.

The exclusive VIP Suites cater for 20 people with the best viewing over The Tarmac or The Dirt and includes catering, live television feed, meet and greet with drivers, full catering and unlimited access to The Pits.

Alternatively, book a table or a seat in the VIP Marquee and join like-minded types in the Paddock.

Mr McNeil said that the event is inspired by the Goodwood Festival of Speed held in the UK and will be a showcase of non stop motoring action with some of the biggest names in Australian motorsport.

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours named Margaret River’s top regional business

Cape to Cape Explorer Tours has taken home two awards, including the top gong, at the Margaret River Region Business Awards on Thursday night (17 September 2015).

Awarded for Industry Development and Tourism Business Excellence, Cape to Cape Explorer Tours Managing Director Gene Hardy said he was honoured and humbled with the awards.

“The finalists of the awards are all to be credited – they are fantastic businesses and it’s a privilege to be named amongst them,” Mr Hardy said.

“Winning awards like this is a team effort and I’d like to thank to some important people who have played a role in our success - the founders of the Cape to Cape Track, the Wardandi Noongar people, Friends of the Cape to Cape Track founder and president Jane Scott and her team and from the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Neil Taylor and the team there.”

Mr Hardy acknowledged the Margaret River Chamber of Commerce and Industry for hosting the awards and thanked their sponsors.

The Industry Development Award, sponsored by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, was awarded to the business that gained the most overall points of the evening, winning Cape to Cape Explorer Tours a $2,000 cash prize. The Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association sponsored the Tourism Business Excellence Award.

“It’s encouraging that our region celebrates small to medium business and business excellence,” Mr Hardy said.

“We have much to be proud of both from a business standpoint and as Margaret River locals. We really do live in paradise and I’m truly grateful for the support the community and industry has provided.

“We work in partnership with many other local businesses – Smiths Beach Resort, Chandlers Smiths Beach Villas, Canal Rocks Apartments, Margarets Beach Resort, Margarets Forest Resort, the Quality Inn, the White Elephant Beach Café, The Common, The Larder, Margaret River Bakery and Nexus Bookkepping - without such great partners, our business wouldn’t be what it is today.

Rally Australia round gives Hayes and Macneall a frustrating time

Last weekend’s Rally Australia round of the Australian Rally Championship (ARC) was disheartening for local WA co-drivers Bill Hayes and Glen Macneall, with both their teams suffering from mechanical gremlins that were hard to pinpoint.

Bill Hayes said both he and driver Molly Taylor went into the event hoping to diminish the eight point championship lead that Eli Evans and Glen Weston held over them. However, they struggled to translate great drives into great times.

“It was fantastic to be at Rally Australia, and we’ve come away with good points - but it was a really frustrating weekend from a championship point of view. We felt we had prepared well for that event but we just weren't on the pace, and haven’t been able to pinpoint why,” said Hayes.

Taylor and Hayes finished the event in third place, 4 minutes 18 behind Evans and Weston. The sibling duo of Steve and Brent Mackenzie split the two teams in second place.

Mark Pedder and Glen Macneall’s event was frequently interrupted by mechanical mishaps which plagued their Peugeot 208 Maxi right from testing and finally saw them retire from the event on the last stage.

“Even though the car is in development we weren't expecting to have as many problems as we did. However, when the car was running well - we were up there!” said Macneall.

The Hyundai i20 Proto of Justin Dowel and Western Australian co-driver Toni Feaver was also was unable to finish the event. However, Feaver was upbeat saying they were able to sufficiently test the new vehicle and were happy with the car’s development. Read full release here

Applications open for Perth Speed Fest Motor Show

If you have a historic, classic, exotic, muscle, or a simply stunning set of wheels, Perth Speed Fest wants to hear from you.

Perth Speed Fest, held on Sunday 13 December 2015 at Perth Motorplex, is a spectacular showcase of motoring from pre 1940s until now. It’s a day of cars, bikes and motorsport super stars with non-stop action on the Tarmac and Dirt.

Event Manager Greg McNeil said applications are open for car and bike owners who want to get involved in Perth Speed Fest Motor Show.

“The Motor Show is more than a show and shine, it’s a moving visual feast – cars and bikes will be on display for all to admire, and then, by category, they will participate in parade laps along the Tarmac,” Mr McNeil said.

“We’d love to see a wide range of cars on displays - from the rare to the super modified. If you love your car and look after it, put in an application form to join the Perth Speed Fest Motor Show team.”

A ‘People’s Choice Award’ will be compiled through votes from the visitors and a guest panel will judge the ‘Best in Show’, ‘Best in Era’ and ‘Best Dressed’.

Western Australian co-driving trio called upon for Rally Australia

There will be three Western Australian co-drivers stepping up to the plate when the Rally Australia round of the Australian Rally Championships (ARC) gets underway in Coffs Harbour on Thursday. Both Toni Feaver and Glen Macneall have been called upon by new drivers, while Bill Hayes will be continuing with Molly Taylor in their pursuit of the Championship podium.

As a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), Rally Australia is a great opportunity for ARC competitors to test themselves against the world’s best. Rally Australia is also a round of endurance, with three days of stages compared to the usual two.

All eyes will be on Molly Taylor and Bill Hayes who are trailing championship leaders Eli Evans and Glen Weston by just eight points.

“It’s the second last round of the season, so we are due for another win we think,” said Hayes. “That would be helpful. It's so close - close enough that no-one can rest. We need to put a bit of pressure on Eli, and he can't afford to make any mistakes either.

“With Rally Australia being an endurance event, you need to be more conservative than you do in the sprint rounds. It's a hard balance, because no one goes any slower! We just aim to look after things a little bit more, manage it and try to make better decisions on tyre choices. We’ll be carrying a couple of spares that we wouldn't normally bother with.

“Testing went really well and we are going into the weekend nice and positive.”

Testing didn’t go quite as smoothly for Glen Macneall, who will be navigating for Mark Pedder in the Peugeot 208 Maxi for the first time. Read more...

Climb for a Smile

Making a difference one step at a time

Almost 200 participants are in training for this Sunday’s Rotary Climb For A Smile, where they will conquer the 50 levels of stairs of one of the tallest buildings in the Perth skyline, 108 St Georges Terrace, to raise money for important Rotary projects.

Entrants participate as an individual or as part of a team, choosing a cause close to their heart to support, with the primary event beneficiaries being Teen Challenge, Melanoma Research, Interplast and End Polio.

President of the Rotary Club of Crawley Nick Poll is thankful to participants for their fundraising efforts.
“Climb for a Smile is our club’s big event for the year, and raises approximately $60,000 which is meaningful sum to the causes it supports,” said Mr Poll.

“This is our first year managing this event as we have recently taken it over from another club, and we’re looking forward to it - an event like this brings everyone together to create a great community atmosphere.”

61 year old Mr Warren, who will be participating in his second Climb For A Smile has chosen Mukti Mission as his charity.

“I work part-time for Mukti Mission and can see the difference that every dollar makes. The charity has been working in India for 126 years rescuing abandoned women and children and giving them a future and hope,” said Mr Warren.

Mr Warren has just returned from India where he got to see the work of Mukti Mission first hand and that has motivated him again this year to meet the challenge of scaling the 1,042 steps.

“When you reach the top and look down and see the view and say 'it's worth it - I've made it’ – it’s an all-round feeling of a sense of achievement,” said Mr Warren.

Climb For A Smile is open to anyone aged 12 and up. It costs $30 to register if aged between 12 to 17 years of age and $40 to register for adults. Participants can register online at www.climbforasmile.org.au. Registrations close on Friday.

Participants are sent up in waves and will be allocated a time to start climbing the. The registrations desk at 108 St Georges Terrace opens at 8am Sunday 13th September, and it is anticipated that all climbers will have completed the stairs by 11:30am.
