Motorsport: where the Perth Speed Fest stars are in action this weekend
It’s a massive weekend for the stars of Perth Speed Fest, with Formula One in Russia, MotoGP in Japan, and the biggest race of the V8 Supercar season, the Bathurst 1000.
Formula 1
In Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo is looking forward to a weekend of being able to concentrate purely on racing, as much of the local attention is focused on his Red Bull teammate and the sole Russian driver in F1, Daniil Kvyat.
The Sochi Autodrom made its first appearance on the F1 calendar last year, with the West Australian qualifying sixth and finishing seventh around the circuit that takes in the perimeter roads of the venues that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics.
“In the car it’s 90-degree corner, straight, 90-degree corner, straight, so in terms of driver satisfaction it’s a little flat,” Ricciardo admits.
With five races remaining in the 2015 season, Ricciardo sits in seventh place overall with 73 points.

MotoGP
On two wheels, MotoGP rookie Jack Miller headed to Motegi in Japan with a spring in his step after his beloved North Queensland Cowboys took their first NRL premiership last Sunday.
The Japanese Grand Prix is the first leg of a back-to-back-to-back schedule that also features Australia (October 18) and Malaysia (October 25) as the MotoGP season speeds towards its conclusion.
Miller, who sits in 18th place in the world championship with 16 points, finished fifth in Moto3 at Motegi last year, his best result in four visits to the tricky track 150km north-east of Tokyo.
V8 Supercars Bathurst 1000
The jewel in the crown for the V8 Supercars’ season comes at Mount Panorama at Bathurst this weekend, and brothers Will Davison and Alex Davison will be looking to go one better than last year when they pilot Will’s Erebus Motorsport Mercedes E63 AMG machine for the 1000km endurance classic.
The brothers came agonisingly close to spraying champagne on the podium when they finished fourth last year, and will share the striking Penrite-liveried E63 for the most important race of the domestic season.
“Alex and I had a great result at Bathurst last year, and it would mean the world to both of us and our family if we could step up on that podium together,” Will says.
