Under Broome’s twinkling skies in Western Australia, the Shinju Matsuri Sunset Long Table Dinner will be held on Saturday September 17, 2016 on the sands of Cable Beach as the sun sinks over the Indian Ocean with a spectacular multi-course dinner prepared by renowned chef Adam Liaw.
The 2010 Masterchef winner has written four cookbooks, is a regular columnist for a number of Australian cooking publications and presents his own television series, Destination Flavour, where he travels around the globe in search of the best and freshest produce.
Liaw has carved a name for himself, particularly when it to creating Asian inspired dishes. He says he is looking forward to using the fresh produce of Australia’s North West in the menu.
“The Sunset Long Table would have to be one of the best dinners on the Australian food calendar. Incredible food as the sun goes down in one of the beautiful spots on the planet. It’s an unforgettable experience and one I’m immensely proud to be a part of this year,” Liaw says.
“The Kimberley is full of incredible produce that you might not expect. Everyone knows about the barramundi, but some of my favourite Kimberley ingredients are things like pearl meat, gubinge (Kakadu plum) and even the trochus sea snails from up around One Arm Point.
“There’s nothing like going from the Australian southeast to the Australian northwest to realise what an incredible country we live in. Up around Broome it’s a paradise of good food, diverse culture, and true-blue Aussie hospitality,” the Shinju Masturi head-line chef says.
The Sunset Long Table Dinner was introduced to the long-running Shinju Matsuri festival last year and in just one year has proven to be a true event highlight.
Assisting Liaw with the food preparation is chef and WA Food Ambassador Don Hancey, who catered for the dinner last year.
“This year’s Sunset Long Table Dinner has all the ingredients to be even more awesome than last year," Hancey says.
“Working closely with local Indigenous, Malay, Chinese and Japanese communities, we’ll showcase regional Western Australian produce, and cooking talent - Kimberley delicacies like mud crab, prawns, rangeland beef, barramundi and of course Broome’s unique pearl meat. It’ll be an amazing atmosphere and an absolute pearler of a night.”
Last tickets remain for the Sunset Long Table Dinner and cost $250 and include appetizers, a four-course meal, beverages and entertainment.
The annual Shinju Matsuri - Japanese for “Festival of the Pearl” – is a kaleidoscope of colour and culture that celebrates Japanese, Chinese, Malaysian and Aboriginal cultures which all played a role in shaping Broome during its the prosperous pearling days.
Now in it’s 46th year, Shinju Matsuri is a nine-day festival from 10 to 18 September with over 20 events, which starts with the ceremonial waking of Sammy the Chinese Dragon.
Highlights include the Floating Lantern Matsuri where hundreds of candle-lit lanterns containing special messages are released, the Sunset Long Table dinner set on the sand on Cable Beach, art exhibitions and awards, a float parade, film, music, dance, family and community events, food and a Festival Finale party.
